...I took the windshield off my Road King because the weather was hot. It has been quite a while since I road without some kind of wind protection.

Let's just say that the windshield is going back on today. I don't know how some riders can go on long-distance trips without protection. Although my bike is certainly stylin' without the windshield on, basic human comfort trumps.

Feel your pain, bro. I test drove a V-Rod out at Sturgis the first year they came out. Ergonomics was not part of the design, and the half helmet I was wearing about tore my head off, and I walked around for a couple of days with a sore neck.

Hard to believe we never used windshields back in the days of home built choppers, one of which I rode to Mexico.

when I got back into riding in 99 I never used a shield. My buddies would state that I was crazy. I use to tell them if you want the stereo, windshield and cruise control take the car.
Well needless to say, I rode behind a shield one day and never went back.
I really dont enjoy eating CROW!! But it is easier to do behind a shield withe a stereo and my bike on cruise!!!

I'll never ride without some kind of windshield again.
I guess I have truly become an old fart.
Years ago I put up with lots of discomfort because it was more important that my bike looked cool.

I don't think I have ever rode a bike without a shield of some sort, and never will. I guess I like ahving a little protection from big bugs and rocks that I can duck behind the shield instead of hitting my forhead, ouch.

I bought my last bike (before the SG) and procceded to ride it home about a hundred miles down an interstate hwy without a windshield. I didn't have adequate eye protection. I needed goggles, I only had glasses. After a few bugs to the face and a load of dust and pollen in my eyes they were nearly swollen shut by the time I made it home, which was some time later as I could only make about 60 mph, and I stopped at 2 or 3 rest areas. Needless to say, the bike had a shield on it within a day or two. I'll never try that again.

Tom from http://harleygoodies.com/ here. Once you get used to riding with a windshield, it feels like you are getting beat up without it. I used to ride with a shield on a daily basis for many years. When I got my current ride it came with a shield but I decided to go without it. I am now used to riding without a shield. When on a long trip I put a roll bag on the bars which acts as a shield.

Best regards,
Tom

I have a detachable on mine. I ride for about 1-2 days without it every time I wash and detail my bike because I like the look of it better without. Needless to say when it goes back on my riding comfort increases in a huge way. It is hard to get used to riding any distance without my windshield.
