I bought my bike used and I am trying to figure out what I got. I was taking a look at the air cleaner the other day and I have no IDEA..I do have the normal football cover without the black backing part. Also, the filter doesnt say K&N but looks like one, but says its for 88 HDs. What about the mounting hardware? Can some one shoot me some pics of what it looks like? help please. if you have any pics of a stage 1 install or setup send them to evobros3@hotmail.com please. thank you.
your filter could be a k&n RK-3909.
I don't remember if it says k&n on it or not but it's gauze covered with screen mesh and is oiled with red oil. Stock football covers it with no plastic back.

If your picture is of the bike, then looks to me like the previous owner put the stock muffs back on, which would not be a Stage I upgrade anymore.
Maybe I'm missing your question, but it sounds like you're trying to determine whether your bike has the Stage I upgrade or not? Stage I is new breather (or breather kit), slip-ons, and re-map.
Well, since I bought the bike I put some Wild Pig Slip-ons on. I addes a PCIII from FuelMoto. And since I got the map from Jamie I am wondering what kind of air filter and system I have. My pic right now doesnt show much. I will have to get into the bike again tonight or some time soon. The backing plate has 2 black hoses that go from the top bolts to the air cleaner.
If you don't have the backing plate, then most likely some type of stage 1 AC was installed. If you remove the football and fileter and post a pic I am sure one of us could identify it.
If you can see the filter element by looking at the AC from the backside you have a Stage 1 AC. If you see a large black plastic cover behind the chrome outer cover and can't see the filter element you have a stock setup.
If the bike had slip-ons and the AC when you bought it, chances are fairly good that it also has the HD Stage 1 download, but not necessarily. Many decide against that and move directly to an EFI controller instead. There's also a chance it has SERT installed, which is a software package that allows you to access many ECM functions via computer software, but other than taking it to the dealer I don't know of a way to determine that. I also don't know a way to determine if you have the Stage 1 download other than taking it to the dealer, who should be able to find out using their Digital Technician software. There's also a chance that if you log onto the HD website you can find out the service history of the bike.
