Part #16585-96. They have an external 3/8-16 thread. They are also slotted on one end. This is NOT a screw driver slot. This end goes in first and is self tapping. You drive these in by screwing a short 1/4-20 hex head bolt into the insert and driving it with a socket.
Turned out the local dealer DID have these brass pieces..put em in as you stated above and I'm riding again. They feel rock solid.
Thanks again to this forum. I remembered seeing something about new style inserts after I had already glued mine in for the second time. They became loose again. I searched for loose windshield, found the thread, bought and installed the new inserts. They appear to be much improved over the old style.
i find it interesting that everyone over tightens these and pulls them out of the fairing..
Its not necessarily a matter of over tightening. The stock pressed in inserts will come loose on their own. mine did. I thought the screws had backed out but the fairing was disassembling itself as I rode.

Great, now you tell me. I screwed up two of them. They didn't come with instructions.
Went to Home Depot, bought three stainless 1/4-20 X 3/8" round phillips head bolts.Put some nail polish on threads and no problems.Stainless looks good.
I was putiing my windshield back on my 2007 EGC and when I went to tighten the screws the two on the outside would not tighten down. I looked and could see the brass pieces
they screw into were spinning with the screws. They may have backed out a bit when I took them out. Any suggestions on this, can it be fixed? The middle one is fine.
Had the exact same thing occur on my 07. You'll need to replace the ones that are spinning with new ones. The slotted end goes in FIRST (they're not screwdriver slots). Grease it up and use the screw to screw into the fairing.
I went to the local True Value and they had the same insert(minus the slots)in hardened steel or brass. I had already repaired mine with Gorilla glue and they are still holding, even after 2500 miles with the Clark 14" Flat top windshield on. I did take the shield off after my fairing came loose(not sure that was the cause, but decided to go back to the stock windshield). I checked with 4 local dealers and two never stock them and the other two were out of stock. If mine strip again, I will either replace with the HD or go the hardware store route.
