Default Oil Cooler

Has anyone installed the HD oil cooler themselves on their touring bike? It looks like an easy job but those are the ones that usually get the most headaches. I just had my oil changed so can I use the same filter or should I out on a new one upon installation? Thanks for the input.

Nothing much to it as long as you take your time.

Make sure you have the Allen key for the bolt on the HD premium oil cooler its a odd size thats very hard to buy. Most people use a bolt and two nuts locked together to tighten the Allen bolt holding the oil filter assembly to the engine.

Very easy job on the 07 not sure what year your bike is. The odd size allen key is 7/16 if I remember right.

n ew filter is a must, and the 7/16" socket is the only pita ,, many members get a hex wrench and cut it down the use a socket. I did mine and used better hoses then HD gives in kit, plus make sure you tighten the clamps with a nut driver not a socket, nice and easy wins the race

Installed myself and was not bad at all. Just one note tho, put a new oil filter on it. I did not because just like you, I had just changed my oil & filter about 400 mi. before and ended up with oil seeping, but that was my fault for not changing it to begin with.
Oh well, live and learn.

Simple enough job odie-in-az...and I personally would always use a new filter whenever I took the current filter off. I agree with the other posters...the only PITA was the correct sized allen.

I also installed the Oil Temperature Gauge Kit at the same time. However; I DID NOT cut the oil cooler hose to insert the temp sensor...instead I installed it into the oil pan for a much cleaner, better looking installation.

Good luck!

Steve

FWIW, the new OTG kits have the sensor adapter included, so apparently cutting the cooler hose or using the over-engineered filter adapter is history. Also a thing of the past is owners making a trip to Napa to get the pan adapter. The new package carries the same part number with an "A" on the end.

In place of double nutting or an allen wrench, you can also use a coupler found at most hardware stores. (I bought mine at Ace/True Value) They're used for connecting two lenths of threaded rod together but it works greeat for the tightening the filter adapter.

Great input bros, I'll refer to this thread when I get ready to assemble. I heard about the weird size allen. Maybe a torque bit would work too? Sometimes I'll use a torque bit when a allen/hex head is stripping out. I haven't bought the kit yet so I'll have to wait until I have it to see what the buzz is.
