I know i have a sportster but I just use plenty of bunched paper towels under the filter as I twist it off and remove it quickly

I saw a tip someplace that I haven't tried on the bike but worked great on the car. Use a large ziplock baggie. Loosen the filter then slide the baggie over the filter and up against the mount. Unscrew the filter and it's already in the bag to be sealed and disposed. Like I said, it worked great on the car filter but I haven't had a chance to try it on the bike yet. Just a thought.

Default filter

I made a makeshift catch similar to the 2-liter bottle trick, but before I unscrew the filter, I use a screwdriver and poke a hole on the end of the filter, towards the bottom to get all the oil out. It still drips a little but most of the oil drains out the hole.

+1, another hole in the top relieves the vacuum buildup and it drains a little faster. I took an old POS phillips screwdriver to the bench grinder and sharpened it up just for this. Use it on the cars too.

Start loosening the filter and once its off, pull the extension off, put the bottle cap back on ( to catch the oil ) and let it sit while you get ready to put the new oil in the bike. When you're ready, pull the bottle out with the filter and oil in it and dispose of them properly.

No mess, and has worked for me for over 5 years.

It is tight getting the bottle in and out because of the shifter, but it is doable.
+1 do the same thing. Learned it right off the forum.

+1.... Can't remember where I learned it, but it makes clean up easy!

if you use an awl, sorta like an icepick but thicker , you can pop a hole in the lower corner of the filter, and one up near the center of the end for venting, and most of the oil will drain out of that lower corner hole rather than all around the filter. an old trick, but gravity is pretty old and still works the same way.

tennessee streetglide, if there wasn't enough help with your oil change questions, there is also a section right below the touring section named "oil and oil related products" you can read there.
