A buddy of mine is contemplating getting the 103 on his 08 roadking. What should he expect to pay and what questions should he ask.His bike is setup similar to mine stage1 and heavy breather now.I dont know anything about this so i'm asking for him here.thanks
i am going to do the same thing to my 08 sg as soon as winter hits, not gonna use up prime ride time for that work. if you look in harleys parts and accesories catalog they have 103 kits. and the service dept should be able to give you a close quote on hours, and take it to someone you feel good about rather than a shop that has a bad reputation. you should be able to figure out roughly what it's gonna cost. with the above.
Whatever you do, MAKE SURE THEY INSTALL COMPRESION RELEASES WHILE ITS APART! It will save you lots of headaches down the road. Often times the dealers have a discount on this in the off season.
When you're ready, contact Kevin at Sangers Cycle at 970-419-5500. He will spend the time with you and answer all your questions, and present all available options and performance numbers. He has performance packages in most price ranges that outperform "mass production" kits, regardless of price. He carries the best reputation in Colorado for performance and service.
I would also have them do some head work while it's apart. I had mine ported and polished and ended up with much better numbers by doing that. I also went to adjustable pushrods and a little bit bigger cam than came with the 103 kit from HD. I didn't do the compression releases, and I am kinda nervous that I didn't based on the probelms that some people are having with the starters. Knock on wood I have been fine, but I have always pulled in on the clutch even though it's in neutral any time I start the bike so maybe that has helped not sure...

If you are going with a 103 you might as well go a little bigger. My thinking on this is pend a little more, and get a lot more.
Not sure how "high performance" a bike he is looking for. I can tell you this.....I got the standard 103" HD stage 2 kit to add to my D&D FatCats. Just finishing the break in. The bike sounds great, and runs great. VERY strong. Final tune coming up soon. I think it cost me $1600 performed by the dealer. Alot less than going 110" with HD, and I certainly don't have the skill or time to tear my bike apart myself.
My question would be why would I buy a piece of crap Harley kit when I could get a Head Quarters kit that really does something?
Real performance costs money, a 103 kit that cost $600 is a waste of time.
If you aren't going to do head work don't do anything!!!
