I have a similar issue. I have a 2008 RG with pewter pearl paint. The upper fairing needs painting. the fairing if fine below the accent stripe, can just the upper portion be painted?
Where are you located? I am in Ca.
Well, made some phone calls today and the PPG paint is actually pretty hard to find, at least in these parts. I did find the local guy the dealer uses for repairs, and he uses Matrix paint, not PPG, but that he can match it exactly. Probably everyone having work done at the dealer doesn't know it's not PPG, so I guess if they can't tell, it's good enough for me. And, like someone else said, I can go directly to him and not pay any additional markup for the dealer. He said just bring in the fairing, and depending on how much work is required, it will be less than $250.
I did think about the fairing bra, but haven't seen too many up close so don't know how they look. Guess I'll just find a time to take the fairing in and have it repaired, even though it means three weeks without the bike. I could kick myself for making the bonehead move I did yesterday, and I can think of a thousand ways now that would have kept me from dropping the bike. Oh well, live and learn, and no real harm done. Thanks to everyone for all the good feedback.
Dang, screws, that's awesome. I tried to run down some small aerosol cans today of the base coat and clear coat and came up empty. Looks to me like Colorrite has what I need. I might try that first. If that doesn't work, I could always take it in to be repainted, but maybe I could at least ride out the Summer and do it over the Winter. Thanks again, bro!
rayers, Yeh you can mask off the stripe and paint the upper. What I would suggest is that you mask the stripe, spray your base (color) then unmask stripe and clear the whole fairing.
After reading some reviews of the Colorrite clearcoat, it seems most people had very poor results. The material seems to be okay, but the application method is poor with the aerosol. Not sure I will go that way.
Has anyone ever tried Paintscratch.com products? They offer the same thing.
This is what I dont get. You can go out and spend $20,000 on a harley and you will repaint part of it with spray paint? It just doesnt make sence to me. Even if I didnt paint for a living I dont think I would do something stupid like that. Just my 2 cents.
