If your are going to take the plunge into a touring bike go with the Ultra Classic. As far as Harley's go it seems to give the most bang for the buck. Till you add the tour pak and the radio and the lowers etc. to any other bike you probably could have had an ultra that has all of it for less money. IMHO My wife was against the ultra, said it was an old mans bike, but know she loves it and can't ride on anything else.
I'm biased, I like that with the RK I can change it around to suite my purpose. Fairing, Backrest, luggage rack, Tour-Pac, with every change I have a new look and different purpose. The RK is a good blank canvass with an iconic front profile that has been a standard for many years. Did I say that I'm biased?
The roadkings are as you explained yourself very versatile.Great all around bike short rides ,long rides, take windshield off or on doesnt matter. Its also a great tour bike atleast to me it is.Personally i would test ride the bikes you may be interested in.There is a different feel.I have ridden a couple of ultras and could not for the life of me get accustomed.I felt too closed in or confined. Also rode street glides great bike but that wall in front of me got old.The roadking was my choice after some debate over the streetglide.
After riding for 20 years of riding I got a 09 Street Glide. I love the bike, but there are days I wish I did'nt have the fairing. First bike with one. I even thought of finding someone with a RK who wants to swap front ends. Choose wisely. You can always get a fairing kit for the RK. Good luck.

Same here. I really like my SG, but the fairing really messes with the air that the RKC does not do. I personally think the RKC is more aerodynamic than the SG. The only thing the RKC doesn't do well compared to the SG is protect the hands in the elements and listen to the radio. But I like the SG style and will keep it.
Ride the rented FLHR next week with an open mind. If I'm sold, I'll rent one later in the month here locally (in NC) and get the wife on it for a trip to the beach for a couple days and see what she says.
If I'm not sold on the FLHR after the Utah trip, I'll rent an Ultra to take the wife to the beach. If she ain't happy on that, an nothin' gonna make her happy. Then I'll decide on MY preference - King, FLHTCU or keep my sweet Dyna.
