Squeal/squeak at idle transposed
Thought I would post this experience to add to the group collective memory (Resistance is futile). Have been on the forum for +2 years and do not remember seeing anything on it. For the last month or so my 03 EG Classic has been making an increasingly loud squeal/squeak noise from what I though was the primary area when the bike was at idle. I checked the engine mounting bolts, spent many hours with a Stethoscope and even drained the primary oil to see if there were metal particles in it (There weren't any). I was getting to the point of thinking I will have to take off the primary cover etc. Yesterday I am trying to find the source yet again and I put my foot on the muffler. Away goes the noise. Turns out the source of the squeal is a worn hanger rubber at the outboard muffler mounting point. I have been wrenching for +50 years and continue to forget just how far noise, especially squeaks, can be transmitted/transposed from their true source

The rubber at the rear muffler goes hard after repeated heat up of riding, this is typical of most rubber. Spraying any type of oil will only stop it until it is dry again and starts squeaking again. These rubber mounts are inexpensive and I have replaced many on other bikes as well as friends bikes.
