Almost anytime during the week. Weekends are crowded with the crotch rocket and sportscar racer wannabees along with enough cops to carry the place off. Why it has the reputation it does is beyond me! There are MUCH better riding roads all over East Tennessee and Western North Carolina! US 421 from Bristol to Mountain City (418 curves in 11 miles) and the Cheriola skyway are two that come to mind.
because some enterprising person promoted it. You are right there are roads just as good or better..............here in Arkansas and Southern Missouri! Don't worry about it. We road it on a Monday and met one truck with a 28 foot trailer (also known as a pup) and he was on his side of the road. It was a nice ride, but living where I do, I was disappointed. I felt right at home on the infamous "dragon" In my opinion, the ride is over hyped, but still worth doing.

If they get caught ?????? Doing what ????? I think it's legal for them to use it, but it's impossible for them to use it without crossing the double yellow.
Its a US highway so it perfectly legal for any and all traffic...not the smartest route but its legal...
I have rode the dragon multiple times and never once seen an 18 wheeler. I believe the local law enforcement agencies have gotten stricter on the dragon for not only on helmets but speeders and traffic alike.
It is a road you need to ride a few times. While your there head north if you can and take SR70 off of US58(best ridden going south). 83 Miles long very little traffic and holy **** fun as hell to ride. I'm not saying its better then the dragon just as good
Wife and i did Thursday in the mid afternoon... was light traffic..keep an eye out for the fast cars and bikes in the mirrors...let them go... It's not as bad as everybody says really...Remember it's a state maintain road and you have the right to ride it at the posted speed limit...If you do this at least one way you will enjoy a bit of the beautiful sight...go to the top and turn around at the Power lines and go back down to the store....Foothills pkwy and Cherohala Pkwy are nice too...also try SR1310 south of Robbinsville to Franklin...Nice scenery.
As mentioned getting on it betwee 11 a.m. and after 4 p.m. during the week ends is a good rule to follow, that is if you are going to be there on the week ends. We road it last year about this time and going back there next week. We started out at 9 a.m. for the loop which included the cherohala highway, IMO if you put two together it makes for a great day of riding. And the big trucks, that early in the morning you won't see any.
Enjoy the ride and remember do not over ride your skills.

Haha...The OL probably won't even let me get close to riding my skill level, unless I leave her at the cabin. ...Which is fine...I want her to enjoy the trip also.
