got an 07 FLHTC. starter kicks out and takes two to three attempts to start bike. a Harley mechanic tells me there is an adjustment/repair that needs to be made that requires removal of the primary case cvr. what he says makes sense but ive never heard of this before. says that when its on the compr stroke the starter is kickin out. starts like a dream when the engine is in the right position.he's an indie.

thoughts or comments?????????????????
I had a starter issue with my 07 FLHTCU, it just wouldn't start and it ended up being a warranty issue.
Not sure but if it's not corrected early it can lead to damaged teeth on the ring gear.
Oh, by the way, I found the service bulletin at the time I was having trouble, the dealer didn't know about it.
I tried to upload the service bulletin, but couldn't. It has to do with the started working loose and causing a short. If you need a copy PM me.

Had to do it on my '05 SEEG. Replaced the ring gear and the pinion gear (103" with hi lift gear drive cams) and the tech from Rivera advised to shim the pinion gear so it would engage quicker. Too much clearance meant the gear would be spinning too fast before it meshed with the ring gear. Shimmed mine about 1/8".
both is making sense to me. the shim and the serv bulletin. i replaced the starter in 10/08 wit OE. just looked at the old one -has minor wear on the end of the teeth. maybe ill replace the starter drive at the same time???
anyone have the part # for the starter drive gear?????????????
i just pulled the stater out of my 1985 FLTC, so i can put the bolt back in my oil filter housing, my son-in-law, hay dad why is your oil filter flopping around, is it suppose to be like that ? ah no. so i think if you have to pull your starter for some reason put a socket on that bolt, but be careful the hosing is cast aluminium.

i know this is an old post however it is the exact problem I'm having. My question is dose the shim go behind the jackshaft I read one that said it goes on the jack shaft bolt which makes title sense to me.
