Default tools on long rides

My wife and I are about to take our first 1000+ mile trip. What tools do u guys normally carry on long trips. Obviously, i dont want too much weight on the bike. What do u guys suggest i bring along?

yea, what he said, plus if you got tubeless tires, a patch kit and stripped down air compressor might be your best friend sometime.

I carry all of the above plus a can of fix a flat at a last resort. I also carry a CO2 inflator which is tiny. Basic handtools is really all you may need. Also if you have a new bike you have a year of roadside assistance covered, but I have since renewed and upgraded my roadside plan. I had a rear tire blow on my way to work in DC a few years ago. It took them an hour and half to get to me but they brought a trailer and took it to the nearest HD shop. They will even pay for your hotel and a daily food perdiem if your stranded. I haven't had to use that luckily but my dad got stranded in Reno for 3 or 4 days waiting on a new tank after the rocker rubbed a hole in the channel. His room was paid for and they gave him something like $75 a day for food. Plus it didn't cost me a dime for the tow, it's all included. So really if you have the Road America plan all you will need to pack is your cell phone.

If I was you I would take:

1 bottle van winkle 13 year old rye whiskey, half a dozen or so condoms, 1 switchblade & a mobile phone in case the bike breaks down.

If she is on the pill you can forget the connies.

Dont over prepare, it can make things really boring. Breaking down in the middle of nowhere can be a great part of any trip. You get to meet new people, borrow their tools, improvise a repair, run late and end up with a story to tell.

All above...Sounds like a lot but if you have to use them once you will toss the extra t-shirt or underwear for the extra space....

I carry about 15lbs of tools in a zippered bag...basically a tool to do anything I think I could do on the side of the road. In another zippered bag, I carry the guts from a mini air compressor and a tire plug kit. I also carry an emergency belt.

More than likely if you take it you won't need it, if you don't take it - you will. I've carried all of the above plus a length of fuel line for siphoning. Haven't needed any of it yet.

If you have not seen this web site, http://www.cruztools.com/toolkits%202007.html

Another thing I carry that most do not suggest, extra fuses. Only had to use the tools a couple times.

Like the others said, bring it and you won't need it - Don't bring it and you will - Also, a small set of needle nose vise grips - Had a buddy break a throttle cable - Took a little skill using these to throttle but we made it to the dealer -

Good luck and have be safe and have fun -

The other thing that works well, from the sports store or camping store - The LED clip on light - They clip on the visor of a ball cap - Picked one up for around $10.00 and small enough to pack with the tool kit -
