Default 5000 Mile Service???

My dealer wants the same money for a 5000 mile service as he charged for the 1000 mile service. ($335.00) As I understand it there is a lot more required for the 1000 mile service. I find it hard to believe they'd spend as much time adjusting things and tightening critical fasteners as I hope they did at 1000. Good thing I can change my own fluids. Total cost will be under $40.00.

Get a service manual and get used to working on your own bike. It is a money saver and quite simple. My bike has never seen a dealer since I have owned it. the prior owner always took it to the dealer. At least half of it's life has been good.

Do it yourself. It's not that difficult. 1000 mile took me about 4 total hours and I took my time. Save your receipts.

+1 on the manual. My father in law lives in Tenn he brought his bike to the stealer for his 10K maintenance, the service manager told him to come back in 2 hours it would be ready??? He left with his bike. I do all my own work, 2 hours seems like a very short time for a 10K.

+1 on the Manual. It's easy to do and I personally enjoy doing it. All you need is a few basic tools and a torque wrench. The manual walks you through each step - easy stuff and saves you a ton of money. At the rate I rack up the miles I'd be in for a 5k service every 6-7 weeks for $355 - that would ruin me so it's a no-brainer to do it myself.
