Default Confused about oil viscosity!

Oil viscosity, I don't know too much about the oil and viscosity, with that being said what is the best oils weight to use as far in all 3 holes? I seen on different threads that some are using 20w50 in engin which seems to be standard but for primary and trannies some are or using 75/140, 85/140, 75/90, so what do you know what is best for your ride, I guess it depends on what part of the county you ride in? For riding in the west to southwest which is better?

You will get many answers regarding this topic, but I would say it is a matter of preference. I run a 20w50 syn in all three holes and always have, never had any issues and I have 30k on the clock.

it has been stated in oil studies that the actual viscosity of the gear oils 75W90 and others are really about the same as the 20W50 engine oils. the difference is to prevent accidently putting gear oil in an engine.

Lol. Nothing like replying to your own thread 10 months later. Anyway.... Yes, Mobil does make a V-Twin oil, but the Mobil 1 15-50 is perfectly fine to run as well.

Yes, there is Mobil 1 synthetic for motorcycles. You can find it at Autozone and other parts stores.

Oh man... you just had to mention "clunk" didn't you? j/k

Yeah, everybody has an opinion on it. For my money it's engine oil in the engine, gear oil in the trans, and many choices in the primary. I've been using Formula+ in there and like the feel but may try ATF next time since I can't leave anything alone for some reason. I think most will agree that high tech synthetic engine oil in the primary is overkill (especially for the price) and can actually cause or contribute to slipping when hot and sticking when cold which is a large factor in the clunk you hear.

I don't know if the sale is still on, But Advance Auto is or was having a sale on 20W50 V-twin. A search might tell you. I've read a lot of oil threads on here. I'm changing my tranny to Redline Heavy with shockproof. I had to order it online as well. Ordered from Morethantires 12.95 a quart if you buy 12 you get free shipping. Got that info from a forum member. Great info on here...

I have been using type F ATF in my 02 RKC for about 10K miles with great results. Also, if you develop a leak from the primary it will easy to identify. I change every two oil changes.
