cam tensioner problems, orange fibers in oil filter
has anyone had orange particles in there oil filter?
the dealer tells me it is the cam tensioner coming apart.change them before they grenade.
also should change lifters,cam-bearings,chains& go to the new style breather kit, metal instead of plastic
get this, one Harley dealer price $1,162,34. right out of the book full price no discount, the next dealer 1,400,00, should they not all be the same ,the price of the parts should all be the same, both labour rates are within 50 cents of each other, and the Harley labour time is 6-hours.
i am thinking of writing a letter to Harley to ask why, also i think these cam tensioner should be a recall issue, since every dealer says it is a common problem,i believe if they don,t start owning up to some of these issues they are going to be i serious trouble, the people who are buying these bikes are not stupid like the dealers treat people most of the time.
anyway does anyone have any comments on any of these issues?
Your dealer is basically telling you the truth. The tensioners are a "wear out" item like your clutch and brakes. They gotta be changed sometime. There is no set interval. They might last 20k miles or 100k miles. There is no rhyme or reason why some last longer than others. It's a crapshoot.

If yours have not grenaded yet you can get by with just changing the tensioners. Save money by doing that. You got 50,000 out of the originals. How long are you going to keep the bike? The dealers solution is more expensive and if you are going to ride the bike forever it is worth it. Gear drive cams is the more permanent solution. It is a known problem. I just checked mine at 16,000 miles. Mine are good for now.
also replied to your other thread, jim. as already pointed out above, get it fixed now and avoid more costly repairs later if your motor goes. best of luck writing to HD about this matter.
