Engine Sputtered...?
Ok, so I was on the highway today, gas light came on right about when the needle hit a quarter of a tank. So I was about 10 miles from the gas station at that point. The bike strangely cut out a few times and sputtered, so i downshifted to 5th and it kept doing it. A few seconds later, all was back to normal. Still had about 8 miles to go. The next 6 were without incident then it did the sputtering in and out again for about 10 seconds. I started to pull over but it kicked back in. Got gas and all was fine. Filled up and it only took 4 gallons. Was this some sort of low in gas issue or could it have been something else?
Is your bike EFI? If so it is most likely the hose inside the tank from the fuel pump. They have been known to get pin size holes in them from rubbing on the tank. I had the same symptoms on my bike a couple of years ago, and that is what it was. When the tank is full of gas or above the line it makes no difference, but when it sucks air in, the engine will sputter.
