Just my 2 cents.

Turtle wax Chrome Polish from Walmart $3.98. It seems to clean of anything short of melted rubber off pipes.

Works GREAT...non abrasive, fantastic for both chrome and aluminum. removes overspray, waterspots, and much more. Makes aluminum look like a mirror with just a little effort. Use the sealer after to make sure they don't get that gunk on it again.

You will think I am crazy but 000 or 0000 steel wool dipped in turtle wax. It will take rust, melted on rain pants, sap, bugs or whatever off and then when its done buff it a little and its nice and shiny and doesnt leave scratches. I was told about it by a guy who worked in a detail shop and thats what they use. I have been using it for years on 3 different bikes.

Right. The same nimrod that got it on there will be the one that 'tries' to get it off with who knows what. I never let the dealer wash my bike. Ever. Spend some time around the bike wash and you'll understand why. Nobody will do a better job than you will, becuase it's not their bike.

Custom Chrome shops use ammonia-free glass cleaner.
I wouldn't use anything abrasive myself. Even though chrome is very hard, it is also very thin (the actual chrome plating anyways) and when it is compromised nothing short of re-chroming will fix it.
I'd use something like brake cleaner or acetone on a clean microfiber towel and gently wipe off. Test on an inconspicuous spot first though.
When it comes right down to it chrome is chrome - it doesn't really polish!

+1. My cousin has been using steel wool for yrs when he 'really' needs to clean the chrome on his Deuce. Shines it right up like new and doesnt leave scratches. After that just keeps it up with windex and occassional mothers chrome polish.
