I think a lot of the effect is based upon your cam.
Would you mind elaborate a bit on the subject or point me to a thread covering it? I hear of lot about cams and would like to get educated on the subject.
I'm about to pick up a 2009 Ultra with Stage 1 (SE AC, PC-V and Rinehart slip-ons) and wouldn't mind a little more HP/Torque and an even deeper/throatier sound without getting into head work or 103"-110" upgrade.
What cams help get close to the legendary Harley sound? I know sound is subjective but you get my drift.
What's involved in replacing cams and how much labor is needed?
IMO, Fuel injected bikes idle to fast to get the true harley sound, regardless of what type of pipes you run. Caming them up makes them sound like a stock car at idle. Which is not so bad.
I put monster ovals on my ultra about a year ago. absolutely the best I've heard. Cant speak for the CFR mufflers.Just a observation You caan't go wrong with either. I paid about $600.00 for my MO's. How much are the CFR's?

About the same.I actually had the MO's and sold them and got the CFR's.Liked them so much i went ahead and got their dual headers.I would say besides the cfr's being deeper than the MO's they are very different sounding pipes, i would describe them as being throatier and alot more rumble to them.

The CFRs don't seem to have real baffles inside, just some kind of mesh screen around the circumference. Is that correct?

I believe your right really havent looked that much. They are open pipes and sound amazing. The tips are riveted so cant really be taken off.I did,had the tips ceramic coated black and riveted back on.
