I think you have to turn the key counterclockwise to get the tab to depress. My manual is home and I am at work and have done it a few times but not sure which way. Try turning the key to the left and then depress. I'm sure you'll have an answer shortly.
Depress button underneath with screwdriver blade while turning KEY ccw. (the button release the stop for the key, the key releases the latch for the ****) The **** and shaft will unlock and can be pulled out. This can be done in any ingnition postition.
Replacing it is easy, you just have to remember to have the KEY turned to the left (CCW) when inserting it.
After the ****/shaft is off (gee, that sounds dirty) you can remove the nut and spacer, then remove the fairing cap.

If you have small hands like I have use one finger to push the pin up instead of a screwdriver. My ring finger fits perfectly, and it's much easier than using a screwdriver.
