tranny...????
come on,,, if it was the tranny, how could the engine be down a quart?
I was not trying to be a smart azz but i just asked a simple question......It is probably your crank seal.....The response i was looking for is yes it was engine oil......I just tore down a older bike and the trans was down about a pint and the engine was down a quart......the crank seal was bad and the tranny seal was leaking......but it was just leaking the tranny juice on the floor.......and the primary had a hint of tranny juice in it but not much mostly oil from the motor.....
Before I replaced the seal, I would check runout on the crank however. That seal shouldn't go bad this fast unless it was damaged during install, installed incorrectly or if the crank has too much runout then the seal will not be able to seal against a non concentric shaft.

That seal is very close to the bearing. If you can read runout there, time to burn the fker.

or get it fixed. Either way I'd want to know that there wasn't an excessive amount of runout before I just replaced the seal and hoped it wouldn't fail again.
I hear ya all!..............
been lookin forward to this ride all winter,,, now, all thats gonna be on my mind is this dang crank and seal,,,,,,,, hopefully I make it there, and check into the hotel..
a lil J.D. and I'll be thinkin about a whole different seal on the crank!!
If it were Aug. I'd trade at a drop of a dime,, or my credit card!
he said that he removed his primary cover and a quart of oil came out. that's the normal amount, one quart in the primary. you probably are just down a quart, and may have not filled it when you changed oil last time. like an old guy told me a long time ago. hey man, check the stupid stuff first. top off your motor oil and see if it stays there. it's a bunch cheaper than tearing it down to replace something that might be just fine.

Key Words - Primary cover. You should not lose ANY oil when removing the primary cover. He did not say he drained the primary.....

+1 If the bike is standing straight up the oil level of the Primary should just be to the bottom of the primary cover opening. If the cover is pulled and oil runs out (especially a Quart) then the bike has an internal seal leaking IMO.
