Default 08 engine oil leaking into primary...?????

pre ride trip inspection, found I was down a quart in the engine,,
which is odd, cause it seemed low when I did a oil change before I went to Laconia,,, so, I knew it wasn't burning or leaking, I decided to pull the Prim'y cover, out poors about a quart.....
which reminds me when I did the previous oil change, there seemed to be more prim'y oil than normal in the drain pan.

So, I'm thinking crank seal,,, now the question,, I have heard 2 answers...
Is the seal on the outside (prim'y) or on the inside of the engine?

1st one would be rather easy fix.

Any therory to why seal goes in 9,000 miles?

1 qt should be in the primary. Was it 2 qts that came out?

May want to clean the bike 100%, then top off and ride for 30 mins hard. Check for leaks.

If it is leaking into the primary and its not on the bike the seal is on the inside.

kman,,, a quart came out after taking off the prim'y derby cover,,
which shouldnt happen, casue normal level is just to the bottom of the cover.

The crank seal is either inside the case, major tear down,, or outside, as in , behind the compensator sproket,, which wouldnt be that big of a deal.........??

Anyone else?

You sure it was engine oil or trany lube?

if it is engine oil then yes the seal behind the compensator may be bad.....if it is trany then it could be the seal behind the clutch and sprocket.......

Yes Rick there is a seal behind the compensator that is accessible without engine teardown.

Good luck - 08 still under warranty?

That's one helluva leak!

I had to replace the seal behind the compensator on my old Evo, primary to engine, which wasn't a complex operation. I was not having oil migration like you describe, although this is a symptom of this seal going bad, but pressure from the crankcase was pushing through the bad seal into the primary and to the tranny, blowing tranny oil through the breather tube. It barfed really bad above about 65mph and on one trip blew oil onto my rear wheel and brake caliper. Real mess, but I made it home okay.

Bike had 88k on it at the time and I replaced the stator and primary chain for the first time while it was all apart. That seal shouldn't be bad on such a new bike!

Agree with iclick (again damnit). Has your compensator come loose needing retorquing?

But if it's not that seal I can't imagine what would cause it leak that much. Keep us informed.
