I've got to replace the windshield screw inserts with the new p/n 16585-96. The question is, does the batwing have to come off? Or can you get the new one in without undoing anything? Also any tips? I know the slotted end goes in.
Thanks!

slotted end goes in first? Well I didn't know that. I did mine wrong then. But you cannot get them in without taking off the outer fairing.
What's the reason for the slotted end going in first? You'll never get it back out then if for some reason it strips out. I just did the one that had pulled loose. I guess I'll do the others right if they need replacing.
Batwing has to come off. Drive it in, carefully, by inserting a screw into it all the way and turning the screw. I tapped out the threads ahead of time and it made it easier, although most folks don't.
Thanks for the quick info. Anything to worry about when removing the batwing? Is anything going to come flying out at me? The manual says to remove the shield first (makes sense) but is the headlight ring fixed to the batwing?

The slotted end goes in first because it is made to cut its own thread as it is being screwed in. This is done by threading a screw into the insert and driving it into the fairing using the screw.
I replaced my middle insert this past weekend, Of course I looked at the insert and thought it only made sense that the flush end went in first, figuring the slotted end was designed for a straight-slot screw driver to drive it in.
I got it in pretty good then the slotted end busted off as I was twisting-Doh!
It was in far enough (so it seems) and now flush with the inner fairing. Replaced the outer fairing and buttoned her back up. Did 500 miles this weekend and it's still holding tight with no loosening...I think it'll be fine. Put blue loctite on the screw, too.
Does anyone know if you can get new inserts for the lower screws? A couple months ago I cross threaded the lower left screw and didn't know it. When the dealer was installing the new chrome front end he pointed it out to me.
He said that I would have to replace the fairing. Right now the fairing is on with out that one screw.
If I can just screw in a new brass insert that would be great!
