No more pinging....
Not to start another oil debate but I seriously doubt that Mobil 1 has better lubricity and cooling than syn oil. Any synthetic is known to have better cooling properties than dyno oil. The differences if any would be minimal from one synthetic to another IMHO. I do agree there are better oils out there than the HD syn stuff and the change in gear oil helps with shifting and also 5th gear whine.
Bone stock Ultra, no performance upgrades other than Syn3 in all holes. NO pinging, even on the hottest days or steepest grades.
Rode down to Las Vegas a week ago. On the return trip the temperature was 105, and I was cruising at 80 mph for 120 miles non stop. Oil pressure did drop from a normal 32 to about 28. Otherwise, no problemo.
Pinging is abnormal, but I doubt seriously it had anything to do with oil. But, I do think the K&N filter may have solved your issues with pinging. I have a K&N replacement for the HD one, so that could be the reason I don't have pinging. Never have.

are you sure you're not giving it too much throttle in too high a gear? you have to accelerate slower if it's pinging. higher quality fuel, etc. i have a friend and his bike is constantly pinging under acceleration, only because he's giving it too much throttle in too high a gear. do you see where i'm going with this thought? example, you're going uphill in sixth gear doing 65 or so, and give it more throttle, and sure it's gonna ping. time to gear down and let the motor work rather than making it hammer. i hope this makes sense for you.

my 09 does the same as yours. only thing i have done is slipons. not sure where to go with fixing it
What brand of gas are you using? Did you recently change brands?
I live in Fullerton, I can only use Chevron and 76 in my '03 Ultra with any reliability.
I have tried Shell, Mobile and some of the local corner independents and always end up with pinging after the bike gets hot.
The way you take off from a stop when the motor is hot could be an issue. You notice the ping if you slip the clutch and just gradually get up to speed or do you drop the clutch and give it a handful?
imho something has changed and it aint the oil that stopped the detonation.

I use to run Harley oil in my 2005 Road King. It started pinging one summer so badly that the power dropped off drastically. Not good when passing a semi on the interstate. I took it to a dyno shop and no problems were found. But it still did it when I rode it. I needed to change the oil one day and didn't want to go to the Dealership. Went to an auto parts store and bought Valvoline 10W40 for 4cycle motorcycles and a Fram filter. It ran so good I almost didn't realize while riding it that the pinging had gone away. I still use the Valvoline oil and It has never pinged since. Might be a fluke but I am not changing back. The engine seems less encumbered too if that makes any sense.
