Hmmm... I have a SE 103 Stage 1 kit I've had in my garage for about 6 months that I am contemplating having installed someday before too long. Wondering if I should sell it and buy something else for similar money or just go with tried & true?
I missed the poll, but Doc did a 103" build in my Springer and boosted the power to 101/107 (dyno numbers). She is a blast to ride and I have about 9,000 on the build with no issues whatsoever. It is not a Harley "kit," though. Baisley Hi-performance did the heads, notched the pistons, bored/decked the cylinders and he went with the TW-6 cams. Very smooth, usuable power and the compression is only about 10.2:1.
Kinda like a squirrel gathering nuts, I'm slowly accumulating parts to do a 103" build next winter. I just want a bit more ooomph using conventional parts at, hopefully, a reduced cost. So far I have acquired: SEST(sealed) $225, SE 103" flat tops (new) $115, SE 204 cams (500 miles new) $185, H-D top end gasket kit $50, Cometic cam service kit $35, Engineering Total Performance compression releases (2) $42, Barnett hd clutch spring $22 and Cometic primary gasket $22. I still need to acquire new lifters, bearings and other misc parts. My biggest headache (and to others, sorry) was cam choice but I played it safe with the 204. I bought the CR's to use with some 255's but I sold those cams. Even though the motor compression will be lower with the standard .045 gaskets/204 cams, I'm going to play it safe and have the releases installed. I'm thinking for the cost that the gains will be worth it...
I'm sure the 107 is a great ride, but I haven't ridden one, so can't say for a fact. I think the 103 in the touring bikes is a no brainer. (I never ride 2-up) Lots of torque right where you want it, and reliable, too. I've got the ACR's in my bike, and think some kind of CR would be a good idea.
I wouldn't have another touring bike without the 103.
The only differance between the 103 and 107 in inches and power. Even the price is the same. Just a larger bore. There in no replacment for displacment.

Did a SE 103 Stage 3 (kit) upgrade this winter on my 2008 Night Train. The kit included the: SE Super Tuner, new 103 jugs (10.5:1 CR), forged pistons, perfect fit pushrods, heavy duty valve springs (for stock heads), 259E cams, & heavy duty clutch spring. Also put on a SE Heavy Breather & D&D Fatcats 2 into 1 pipes (no baffles). So far, no problems. Bike starts immediately every time (hot or cold w/ no compression release installed) & sounds amazing. A little choppy when idleing (sorta' "old school" chugging cuz' of the cams), but you can really wind this motor out. Dyno shows 25 more HP & 20 more FP than a stock CVO 110. BIG, BIG difference between this motor and the stock 96. Well worth the $$$ ($3,400.00 installed w/ dyno tune @ dealer)
brett, two things i had done while the 103 kit was installed was to get the screamin eagle compensator along with mechanical compression releases. both were a huge improvement with how it starts. the kit i had installed is a new one that's designed for stock heads and the fuel injection. harley part # 27544-10. it's a very well thought out well designed kit, 10.5 compression forged pistons, .579" lift cams. this kit flat *** rocks.
