Yeah at idle. The other thing I failed to mention is that I installed new clutch discs and the AIM VP clutch plate. That could be the rattle I guess. I figured I'd change the fluid at 1000 miles to get the wear particles from the new friction and steels out of there and I'll recheck the adjustment then. The clutch action "feels" ok, and I'm not really worried about it at this point.
I'm also new to Harley. I bought an 07 Police Road King and have had 3 Harley owners ride my bike because I have what I'd call a loud "rock in the can" noise at around 2000 RPMs. But everyone who has rode my bike says it sounds just like their own bike and one said it was quieter than his. So I have come to the conclussion I'm just going to ride it till it quits. By the way, I really like the bike too, noise and all!

I don't for a minute think mine will break if left un "fixed"....I too believe it's only a nuisance noise.(if that's how you spell it)
I'm kinda **** and look for excuses to spend money on my scoot "improving it". I don't care for the loud knock when starting or the clatter when launching mid RPM or when launching on steep uphill grades.....I just can't stand the thought of my comp sprocket slapping back n forth bouncing off the weak springs, nor the idea HD knew about the issue when they released the bike for production, but offer a solution via Screaming Eagle parts that should have been on it to begin with....But that's just me and the way I think and the way I plan to deal with it.
If I had a wife, I'd be glad just to own a Harley and not have the extra time or bucks to be ****, ya know?
Does it weight noticeably more than the stock comp?
Yes, if you compared the two-one in each hand, you would be shocked at how much larger and heavier the SE comp is compared to stock....Does the extra mass hurt launch?...No, it would if that extra mass was located at the final drive pulley, but it is bolted directly to the crank, so no loss generated.
Well I guess nobody has any experience with the compensator "upgrade". Let me ask another question then....does anyone have any fixes for excessive compensator chatter? One of the dealer service reps who test rode my bike said that he didn't hear anything that was not normal but had a hard time hearing over the compensator noise....but that is "normal" according to him.
I just went for a ride today about 160 miles with my wife. Lots of chatter down there, so much so that it sometimes louder than the exhaust note. Is this normal?
I would appreciate any thoughts on this? Thanks for your input Iclick. For you guys that have had 07 problems with the noises and had IDS installed, are there any noises at all from the primary area? I'm trying to assess what is normal. Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
Mine does that once in a while and it's always from going to slow in a particuler gear, I just down shift and it stops.
I started a thread about the Screamin Eagle Big Twin Compensator last year on 10/10/08 and it's still going. I'm sure you'll find answers to all your questions regarding this issue and then some. If you need more specific information, rbabos (Ron) is the man with the experience and the answers. The most current posting on this thread was 08/08/09.

It's always possible to generate comp knock or primary chain slap when lugging, but it should never occur when starting engine or driving within "normal" parameters. Stock comps tend to be at the bottom of the limit and often complain loudly when driven "normally"...A non isolated final drive adds to the clatter. My experience shows that us 07 and up owners need both the IDS and the heavier compensator sprocket to finally silence our drivetrains.

IDS alone did it for me, and I'm not getting any chatter or other noise from my stock comp. Oddly, since upgrading cams a few months ago I haven't noticed the starter knock at all, or at least it is less intense, but I can't make a mechanical correlation between the two. The bike also starts quicker (less cranking) than with the stock cams, which also has me baffled.
