I've read a lot of threads about the 07 noises (rocks in a can) and recently did a search on the 07 RK compensator. Apparantly there is a compensator kit, PN 40274-08 for about $200 to replace the factory one. This new one is much more stout and supposedly quiets the clatter, which in my case, I don't believe is transmission related. I've had the noise (I'm not referring to the 5th gear whine) for over 12K miles now which I've been told is "normal" from 2 different dealers.
This is my fist harley and I love this bike but I'm really getting tired of the excessive chatter and I honestly don't know what "normal" sounds are from the drive line. It sounds like the primary chain slapping or dragging against the casing. I had the IDS installed 2 years ago but it didn't solve this noise. So, before I consider doing compensator surgery, I'd like to know if any of you guys have done this replacement and did it work?

Thanks in advance.
Interesting. IDS cured all my noise issues except 5th-gear whine, and that has mostly disappeared in time using heavy gear oil. I'm not familiar with the compensator upgrade, but would ask you to keep us informed if you do it.
Well I guess nobody has any experience with the compensator "upgrade". Let me ask another question then....does anyone have any fixes for excessive compensator chatter? One of the dealer service reps who test rode my bike said that he didn't hear anything that was not normal but had a hard time hearing over the compensator noise....but that is "normal" according to him.
I just went for a ride today about 160 miles with my wife. Lots of chatter down there, so much so that it sometimes louder than the exhaust note. Is this normal?
I would appreciate any thoughts on this? Thanks for your input Iclick. For you guys that have had 07 problems with the noises and had IDS installed, are there any noises at all from the primary area? I'm trying to assess what is normal. Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
What is this "chatter"? When does it occur? My 08 EGC does chatter a little in first gear if I don't give it enough throttle as I start moving but does not chatter when going down the road. If yours is making this noise under load and while moving at highway speeds then I would say it is not normal.
Not all 96"s have problems with the stock comp, but many do. Yes the Screaming Eagle comp kit will totally stop comp clatter and also allow extra protection if you upgrade to 103 or 110.
Before you buy anything, investigate how to check torque on comp nut....it's something you can do yourself if you have minimum tools and wrenching experience....too bad your dealer didn't offer to check it for you.
Funny you should ask.... I did the SE compensator swap on mine. Had no problems or noise with the stock unit (other than the starter bang when starting up hot), but wanted to upgrade for my upcoming motor build. Now I have a slight "rock in the can" sound from time to time at idle. Go figure. If it ain't broke, I'll fix it until it is... I will say that the SE compensator appears to be quite a bit heavier duty than the stock one, FWIW.
