Default My Cam Update

Well after much research and hunting, I have decided on upgrading to gear drive cams to get rid of the chain tensioners on my '02 RK. (with 20K on her)

I decided to go with the S&S 510G cams. I rode a buddies Ultra with the same upgrade and was very happy with the performance over 3K rpm.

Got an Indy here to do the work for about 1K, others have had work done there and are very happy with him (Hunts Cycle Shack in Gore, VA)

Anyway, one question??? Some have said it is better the snap off the stock push rods with bolt cutters (arghh) in order to not crack the head seals.

Is this a big deal?? Haven't asked the Mech yet?

Don't want to around like an idiot so though I would do it here first...he he. Gotta save for this venture anyway, so I have time.

If you're not doing headwork and have no other good reason to pull the heads, by all means, cut 'em.

I put adjustables in mine with Andrews 26g's. I would do the same again.

Just keep in mind when you install the new pushrods you will need to do something about the pushrod tubes because you will have a heck of a time getting 3 wrenches in there to tighten your new adjustables. You can do this by mix&match with EVO tubes or better yet buy the complete S&S kit. It comes with everything you will need.
Good time to put new lifters in too, I like to use V-Thunder by CompCams lifters. You can get them for around 15 bucks a pop.
Make sure the guy doing your work install new inner cam bearings, Torringtons.
While the 510 cam is not the best choice for a 'king, it will shine with headwork and 95" and a decent 2-1 pipe and meticulous tuneing, I am sure you will like the 3k and above rpm performance.
One thing that you will notice is that it will be real lopey at around town speeds and you may feel that it has a little miss at slack throttle between 2k-2700 or so rpm. This is because for a mild cam there is a lot of overlap, that may cause a bit of reversion, depending on what exhaust you use.
Best of luck,
AP

There's no reason you have to remove the heads if you just remove the pushrods without cutting them...
the valve covers will have to come off but the heads don't...This would be a good time to shim the rocker box's and rockers lateral play... then reinstall the same pushrods back in and keep the sleeper look...

The if you have the time and want to remove the heads then you can install a .030 head gasket and this will bump the compression up .3 points which will help those cams power band come on a bit sooner...

The negative side to adjustables is on a rare occasion, they can loosen. Mine had been in just over 2k miles when one loosened up suddenly. Even though some "experts" don't recommend it, I put blue Loctite on them the next go around.
