Why do guys wear ear plugs when their pipes are not too loud and their music is reasonable? Also, even their motor is not a big built up motor. I am not bashing anyone here. I see guys put in plugs before they hit the road and even riding solo.
Wind noise at 60-70 mph is loud enough to damage your hearing all by itself. Pipes don't have anything to do with it.

There are a lot of little things in life that you'd never really suspect that will damage the heck out of your ears. Obviously, as everyone has already told you, wind is a major cause of hearing loss. Another cause rarely thought of is your Dremel tool. I had an audiologist tell me those are terrible on your ears. (No, your dentist isn't ignoring your screams of pain...he can't hear them anymore). And we all know the sweet sound of loud music has made the word "huh" one of the most prevalent words used in my generation.
With a FF or 3/4 helmet it's not a problem an I don't use earplugs. With my half helmet I wear plugs if I have the windshield off the RK cuz the wind noise is just too much. Otherwise don't need them. I've never had ringing but maybe that's cuz I'm careful about this sort of thing.
BTW, when I did have loud exhaust on previous bikes I wore ear plugs all the time. My current bike has factory exhaust/mufflers and it's not necessary to wear plugs with the windshield on the bike.
Sounds like you'd better start wearing ear plugs if you're getting ringing and have no windshield...
For those that think they don't need to use ear plugged, please go to the calender and take a red marker and circle today's date. Today's the day you were warned about what riding without ear protection can do to your hearing. Most of those that are telling you this are ones that have experienced some hearing lose or know those who have. Please don't take offence and think I'm ragging on you but I'm starting to pay the price for not taking my own advice sooner. Today is the day you can make a choice that will effect the rest of your life.
P.S. If you see me on the road and you need a set of ear plugged, stop and ask. I usually carry about a dozen pair for those in need.
Agree with everyone, wind noise. The wife got a custom made set from "Big Ears" at a show and loves them. Says she hears the radio better and the wind noise was giving her a headache but not anymore. Hell those guys even make them to plug into your HD system sterio if you have one or your Ipod.
