Default 05 ultra - wanting more - umph!

I already have a hot rod - so my need for going fast and getting their quick is covered on another bike!!!!!

I have a 2005 Ultra with a stock 88 - Installed aready, rienhart TD's, big sucker, and PC3.

I want to improve my low-end torque and more HP is OK....i do not want to give up realibility. I bought my Ultra for touring!!!!!!!!

i know i can take it up to a 95 (or 96)....i also know i can reach my goals from just a cam. My budget for this project is $1500-2,000.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the best way to spend my money and reach my objectives!

i also want to hear from those in the houston area where you would take it to get the work done.

thanks for any input and help!

bolt in cams will give you the added low end torque and HP and stay in your budget.
I'm not sure what the recommendation id for the 88 motor, I went with the SE255's on my 96.

others that know more stuff will chime in soon I'm sure.

Best of luck on your build

I have a 00EGC and have the same set up you currently have with the exception of SS510G gear cams and a dyno, grab some adjustable pushrods, gaskets and the cam tools and knock it out. I'm very happy with the set up I have right now.

A cam would be the most bang for the buck.

From all of the stuff I've read, If I were doing cams in my old scoot I would use the chain drives and upgrade to the new hydraulic tensioners.

either way will get you the power you seek...there are a lot of happy folks that have gear drives in their TC 88

Go with gear drive, Better more accurate cam timing , no maintenance, much longer more reliable life. Draw back is you will get a bit of gear whine, other than that it is a much better system.

Check out the Head Quarters 0034 cams. Those and a set of screamin' eagle touring slip ons may give you all you're looking for.
In my case, I went for a 95", 10.25:1 SE cast domes, HQ 0034s, HQ's ignition module, SE air cleaner, a Dynojet kit for the carb, and a set of mufflers that were take offs from a SE Road King. It was a huge improvement from the stock 88!

My goals were the same as yours - more torque (ok, I wanted more hp as well- I like to flog it sometimes ;-) without sacrificing reliability. I've put 25,000 kms on it with that set up, the only problem I've had was one torn carb diaphragm. It's been great, and way more fun to ride than the stock 88...

If I were doing it again I might go with a little lower compression and no dynojet kit. And I should have done gear drives.

Hello Soon to be, I went a little more than you asking about, but I would go with gear drive fur sure.I went with a 98" big bore and S&S 510 cams and I can't here the gear drive at all, maybe the Thunderheaders have some thing to do with that though. I get better milage now than before. As low as 36mpg and a high of 47 mpg. If you want a very reliable Indy, I want take my bike anywhere but Danny's Cycle Shop in Montgomery,TX. It's not that far from Katy. His no. is 936-447-4646 and he's open 6 days a week and on Sundays for drop offs. He will treat you right. He's a no nonsence and no bull **** kinda guy. Tell him Larry Wafer sent you. Good luck

I have had the HQ-0034 cams in my otherwise bone stock '04 EG w/ RTD's and SE a/c for 20K miles/2+ years and haven't thought about a 95" since installation. Do a search and you'll find plenty of happy HQ-0034 riders here.

Use the bigboyz.com cam comparator to compare the specs on three cams at once. Basically, early torque is achieved with an earlier intake valve closing. Andrews 21's have an intake close of 30* IIRC, HQ's 34's close at 36*. The other popular cams (e.g. Woods 6, S&S 510, etc.) have an intake close at 40*

Good luck with your research.
