Question Shock pump/pressure help........

06 FLHTC......

Attach Genuine HD shock pump to valve. Gauge reads zero. Add air to shock until gauge reads 15. Unscrew pump and guage drops to zero. Reattach pump and gauge reads zero. Valve seat is tight and if pump is left on valve for an hour or so there is no pressure drop.So I assume there is no leak.

Attach pump to truck tire and gauge jumps right to 30. Remove pump gauge drops to zero. Reattach pump to truck and gauge pops right back to 30.

So what is wrong here??? Help. Not that I put any air in the shock very often as I ride alone...just the principal of the thing. I know these HD pumps have been described as junk in some posts but it appears to work fine on my truck tire but not the bike.

Thanx as usual!!!

Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with your pump. I'd take a look at the valve core on the bike. Make sure it's tight. If it is and the problem persists, replace the valve core.

Seems pretty obvious that it is not the pump. If no pressure drops as long as the pump is attached to the shocks valve stem but drops when removed, I would say it is the valve stem. Try removing the valve core and re-seating it and see what happens. If that does not cure the problem, I would say that you need a new valve core or the whole valve stem and core.

Agreed on the valve core, if it was one of the connection lines or couplers it would bleed down with the pump attached. Got to be the valve stem and/or core

Thumbs up Valve Core/Thanx

Well as usual the forum comes thru. Replaced the valve core as recommended and now everything works.

You certainly wouldn't notice anything wrong with the original core however. What can go wrong with a valve core??? When I had it out it seemed to work ok.

One thing though. With the old core one pump brought the gauge pressure up to 10#. I thought that was kinda fast to fill 2 shocks even though they don't take a whole lot of air. With the new core it took 5-6 pumps or so to get 10# so I guess the original core must have been stuck and the pump was reading its own pressure. Now when I take the pump off after putting in the 10# and then re attaching it the reading pops right to 10# telling me there is air in the shocks.

So,that's it for what it's worth. Maybe the info will help out someone else in the future.

Thanx

Greg
