Yesterday I crushed my front fender in the classical way; the car in front of me was stopped in the intersection and turning right. Decided to go and after 10 feet or so decided not to go. You are guessing what happened next. Like in slow motion I crushed against him with walking speed enough to damage my front fender.
In that 10 feet the ABS did lock my front wheel 4 times, 4 inch at a time (found 4 skid marks each 4"). So in that 10 feet I had breaks only 10 per-sent of the length, rest of the time ABS was thinking!!! It felt like I didn't have breaks at all!!!!
Without ABS I would have much prettier front fender now.
I'm not saying ABS is useless, I'm saying there are situations where it is dangerously useless. Be aware!!!
Sounds like a failure to me. My ABS just stops with no skids. Were there any traction affecting components? such as oil or water? I've never had my ABS do what you're describing.
i'm really glad that i don't have abs. it works great on my corvette and both dodge trucks. for a bike though? might as well have the goldwing inspired air bags too if that's the case. the salesmen at harley really talk it up as a "must have" option. thanks anyway.

I would like to think that on the road there are always "traction affecting components" but you are right, there was some bitumen patching (dry and old but still) affecting this incident. On the other hand, quite seldom "the moment" let you choose the perfect, ABS friendly spot to use your brakes ;-)
I've found that trying to stop with ABS on even the slightest washboard condition is a trying experience!! From the way you are describing the brakes reaction it sounds like there may have been some ripples in the pavement.
Definately sounds like a bummer. I heard a couple of others saying that in certian instances the same thing happens but no skid marks. Like the ABS system on vehicles but will go the old fashioned way on my bike.
it was my understanding that ABS isn't supposed to even kick in at low speed, thats why they have speed sensors on the wheels.
I know that is the case with mine, when I was doing hard stops in a parking lot, anything under about 10 mph and the bike just stopped, no ABS.
Anything above that and I feel the pulse back from the ABS.
if you only went ten feet you couldn't have been going very fast...at walking speed teh bike should have stopped in its tracks.
