I have a few delimas with changing out my classic leather bags for hard bags. Can you please help me and point me in the right direction?
1. The classic seat hangs over the hard bags too far and the lids do not open or are hard to open. What seat do you guys suggest?
2. I was hoping the hard bags would match up with my classic mounting brackets for the push pins. But again I can get the front to mount up and and align, but I cannot get the back. It is about 1/8" - 1/4" off. I some how jerryriged it to fit for now, hope it doesnt crack or break being tight. But what did you all do for your new hard bags?
I have a set of hardbags ordered for my rkc,and to my understanding the brackets only need to be realigned front and back.have you been able to realign yours?
Seats are really hard to suggest. Any stock seat off a Road King Custom will work as they are narrower. That's what I use for 2 up and love it. 90% my wifes on her own, so I use a Corbin Hollywood solo. Any aftermarket will work that was made for the standar RK as they are ususally cut slightly different.
The brackets are easy: Here's the tip. Loosen both so they can be moved. I think it's a 7/16 bolt. Move the brackets around to align and install the bags and pins. Once installed, tighten the brackets. Now they are perfectly aligned for your bags for easy removal.

Yeah I loosened them both. But still I cannot get the rear to match up. It is too low I cannot get the bag any lower with out takeing the rubber piece off. If I do that then it is a perfect fit. But has to be an easier solution.
I had the same basic problem you are having. After rebuilding the bike from the accident I had to also replace the hard bags. I had previously replaced the RKC stock leather bags with a set of hards bags a couple years ago and they were the older fiberglass bags. The new ones I had ordered through Harley (based on the bike's year - '05) are the ABS plastic ones and the rear mounting brackets on the bike didn't line up properly with the saddlebag mounting holes.
I just removed the rear brackets (which were also replaced new) and had to use a rat tail file to oblong the mounting hole where it attaches to the bike. By doing that it allowed me to drop the bracket lower so the push pin hole aligned properly with the saddle bag hole.
Yeah, I have an '03 and got '03 bags. They are plastic. I started filing the bracket last night but was taking forever. Will resume filing. I just need a 1/8 or so to get it there.
I have a 2-up pillowlook HD seat with matching backrest (and mounting hardware) for sale. All came off an '02 RKC (see pic below). As you can see, the seat fits well with the hardbags
One thing that you might consider is to send your seat to Mean City Cycles; 828-428-1521 or Toll free 866-550-SEAT. They have modified a couple of seats for me and I have been very happy with them.
