Unhappy Loose Drive Belt

This is what happens if you let your drive belt get to loose. I am glad I can do the work myself. At $200 for a new belt and who knows what the stealer would charge for labor.

What is "too loose"? How was it set using the 10# method?

To loose was not as tight as a banjo string. Not sure what the #10 method is.

Tight enough to make a "twang". Squeal like a pig boy.

With ten pounds of downward thrust, useing the top of the belt, it should not move more than 1/2" I believe. You might want to check either the owner's manual, or the service manual. At any rate, I push mine with my hand, and if it feels springy, it's good, if I can puch more than 1/2" to 1" then it is too loose. Same thing I do with my chain inside my primary. I just stick a finger in there and see if I can move it. Although, I would recomend an automatic tensioner for the primary chain. Just for peace of mind.

Easy to adjust final and primary,do it when belt or chain is hot, never have turned many times to find loose and tight spots, seen many industrial chains and belts adjusted like that no problems. No problems on my bikes either.

Good post. Curious, how many miles on that belt? And did the tension suddenly start loosening, or had it been always adjusted on the loose side?
