Do you have the K&N element or the HD blue rimmed one. If you have the HD blue rimmed dry element, I would replace it with a K&N oiled filter element.
There have been problems with the blue HD filter deteriorating after a few thousand mile. If you get the K&N 0800 you will get a filter that is oil treated, and they will last for the lifetime for the bike. They are oil treated and all you do is wash them periodically and re-treat with oil. K&N has a kit to do the cleaning and treating.
The dry SE filter can be cleaned with air cleaner/degreaser part #99883-88T, instructions on the install sheet. I prefer the dry filter, no oil residue!
I have to agree with BH on this one. There are countless problems assocatied with over oiling air filters and wetting the MAF. I run K&N's on all my vehicles and just shake out the dirt. When they get that bad, I replace them.
But Iam the same person that replaces a battery every couple years instead of waiting for it to cause troubles
I just ordered K&N HD-0800 from Auto Zone yesterday(32.99). When I look on the K&N website it does not list that filter to apply to 2006 models. If it doesn't, I reckon I'll have one for sale. Anybody got a for sure answer on that????
To check if their dirty hold a light up to it with element out, you should be able to see light if not clean or replace. There is no set mileage, it depends on your envirement.
