Should be a poll question !
Old Seminole Saying.. Fear Death die 1,000 times No fear of Death die once ... Now persaonally I want to ride til I am 80 but I always know the consequences of what I face every time I sit on a Bike.. At age 60 Lost more Brothers and Sisters than you wish to know about ..
I was approached last week with that same little saying. This guy (that I didn't even know) told me everybody has gone down at least once. I mentioned to him that I had been riding since 1987 and had never been down, and he said I was either a liar or too proud to admit it. I tell him, "Hey, if I go down and live I'm surely going to tell people." "So you must be a liar." he says. I could see where this conversation was going. So I told him that there are apparently three are kinds of bikers, those that have gone down, those that are about to go down, and friggin' idiots, and since you have gone down at least once, guess which 2 of the 3 categories apply to you?
Needless to say things got a little tense after that.

To me it should be there are 2 kinds of bikers...those that have dropped their bikes and those that are going to. I sure hope that crashing is not that common. To me it's like driving anything. If you're inattentive a lot more likely to crash. Not saying it can't happen. We can all be in an accident, even one that might be impossible to avoid. But I sure don't feel like everytime I get on my bike that since I haven't crashed yet that today is the day. Sure wouldn't ride if I felt that way.
I do NOT buy into the concept that I am bound to crash by some unknown, all knowing, cosmic force. Personally, I think alot of guys buy into that theory to make themselves feel a little better after the fact. Now, don't get me wrong, the odds are good that it WILL eventually happen but that "been down or will go down" stuff....not so much!
I don't buy into that I am bound to crash either. I have never crashed, and don't plan on doing so, though I'm sure noone plans on doing it. If it happens and it's unavoidable, then I hope I have the experience to make the right decision to minimize the damage.
When I think of the kind of bikers there are, I think there are three kinds. One kind buys a bike so he can say look what I have, one kind buys a bike to bar hop and look COOL, and then there are those like me that buy their bike to ride! Now going down can and does happen to all three groups for sure, but I venture to say those that buy their bikes to really ride have fewer crashes than the other two groups even though they rack up lots more miles. I have had one un-avoidable crash of which I did everything right to lesson the crash. I had no serious injury's and was back on the bike in one month and I have almost 300K miles on my old butt. I don't get on my bike thinking I will have an accident, if that day comes when that is what I am thinking I will quit riding. I feel like it is the going where you look thing to ride with that kind of mind set IMHO.
Well I'm sure glad to see I'm not alone in my thinking. I ride nearly 15K annually but I am carefull and watch for other drivers and their intents. I don't party at all and I ride within my limit, no matter who I ride with. My wife is usually on the back too.
