The wife and I have been riding an '06 Ultra since last October. We are now adding a trailer to the travel plans and I'm not sure if I need to use a wiring isolation relay. Does anyone know if the wiring in my Ultra will support the additional load of the trailer lights?
Once upon a time, there was a motorcycle that wanted to tow a trailer. The motorcycle was older and quite beautiful, but alas, was not very smart (it did not have any computers or sophisticated electronics on board). The motorcycle and the trailer shared the bike's wiring for their lights, and they lived happily ever after.
What's the moral of this story? Modern motorcycles do have computers and sophisticated electronics. Also, in an effort to improve mileage, reduce weight and costs, manufacturers are using the smallest gauge of wire that will support the motorcycles lights. The act of simply tapping extra lights on your bike can cause damage; blow fuses, burn out relays, or worse. But never fear, EC is here!
Our trailer relay isolation packages easily and properly connect and isolate your trailers electrical load from the motorcycles factory wiring, fuses, relays and computers and electronics. These units use micro-relays in an epoxy potted housing. Main power and ground come from the battery. .
In short, the Isolation Relay does just that. It isolates your Bikes Electronics from anything that could possibly short out or surge on the Trailer, keeping the 2 seperated.
You won't have to worry about some short in the trailer taking down all your bikes electronics, making it inherently safer.
What's your onboard computer (if it has one, for EFI or such) worth ? Or, even worse, getting stuck at night and having the trailer short blow out all your rear tail / headlights?
Having pulled a trailer for several years, I would not be without it...too much expence in replacing your bikes EMC if a short happens. Also, with one installed, you are less likely to get stranded on the side of the road because of a trailer light short. They're not expensive and install easy. Go to a shop the services a lot of Wings, they all stock some type of relay....wingers have been using them for years.
