Roadking Riders Only
I'm kind of picky, but budget minded, when it comes to audio stuff. I like the best sounding stuff for the money, w/out going overboard spending money on it, based on the many things I need to spend money on, if I had it to blow I'd buy higher end stuff. Anyway, point is I have fairly high expectations for audio stuff, but I was trying to be realistic about smaller sized speakers to go on my king, not trying to get my hopes up, if I could hear the music at 70, I was going to call that a success.
I run 12.5" bars, and w/ or w/out the windshield, I can hear it up to 80, but hear it better at 70 or so. W/out the shield, I can hear gps commands up to 70, w/ the shield up to 80-85 or so.
I have a phone w/ an mp3 player in it, and a gps w/ an mp3 player in it, and I can hear both of them well.
I noticed my gps seemed to have a little better sound to the music, I think I already used it on an ultra (rental) and may have played w/ the eq on it before, but haven't played w/ the eq on the phone yet.
All in all, I'm happy w/ the product so far. I like the way they integrated into the bars using the control mounts on my RKC.
I used some chrome wire loom to dress up the cables a bit, and wired the power wire into the accessory connector under the seat, since I already was already installing a new device (cig lighter power port) using the connector, I had a tech crimp (special crimping tool) the power lead to the deutcsh pin on the connector.
I made a way to mount either the phone or the gps to the tank dash panel, so I could easily reach the devices. If I had gotten any other kind of speakers, I might have mounted a device to the bars at the controls, or using a ram mount or something, but since I already had the speakers on there, I didn't want it to get too cluttered, and I liked the idea of having the devices on the tank panel out of the wind or possible debris, so far so good, got back from a 1300 mile trip w/ no issues.
The only problem I have, using a battery powered music source I get no electronic or engine noise in the speakers at all. However, when the device is plugged into the cig power port, I can hear a little electronic noise when no song is playing. I've also noticed it's worse on the gps than on the phone, which makes me think it's a device and power issue, rather than anything to do w/ the speakers, because as I said, it's crystal clear when source is running off battery power. It's only noticeable when the engine is off and there's a space in the song, w/ the engine running you can't even notice it.
I saw a guy on here that had the speakers and he hid the wires in the bars, because he was installing bars at the time. I didn't want to mess w/ that, so I just used some chrome loom to cover the wires, since all my other wires are hidden already, I just wanted to dress them up a bit. I did have to take my time feeding the wires w/ their plastic clip end on them, through the holes where the bar goes under the cover. Might have been easier if I took the cover off, but I wasn't sure and didn't want to mess w/ that, so I taped the plastic connectors together in the smallest profile possible, w/ blue painters tape, to feed them through the holes where the cables go through, and took out the front headlight mounting assembly to grab them from the front and help feed them through.
When it came time to run the power wire, I used a tip I learned from this forum when doing my fog lights. Instead of taking the tank all the way off, I loosened the front screws on the sides of the tank, removed the rear screw on the tank, propped a socket under the lip for the bolt in the rear of the tank, and used a wire hanger to pull the wires under the tank....
