Default Wanting to go 103" kit....need advice...

Hey everyone,

I just got back from Sturgis on Saturday and had a great time but I did notice that I want/need more power when full loaded and pulling a trailer. I'm not looking for something to do burnouts with or anything crazy just a little more power for passing vehicles and going over mountain passes. I am thinking about going with a SE 103" Stage 2 kit with cams. I also want to add an oil cooler to the motor to help with cooling. I was wondering what you guys would think is a fair price for the install? Also how will the dealer handle warranty if anything comes up with it since I am not purchasing it with the bike when new???

Is there any other items I need to add at the same time like adjustable push rods/oil pumps etc? Ultimately I am looking for a moderate increase in power but hoping to retain the reliability/usability of the bike for an everyday rider.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Skip SE, pass go and look at the 107" kits from reputable shops/builders

Look to the after market, you will get more for your dollar. Scremin Beagle stuff is way over priced for what you get.

I paid $1440 last winter for my 103 upgrade. I already had a PCIII, Fulsac true duels, 2" Rush mufflers, and a SE Stage I breather kit, so add another $grand$ or so to the price tag. $3K would be a good round figure assuming you didn't get too radical on pipes, etc.

103 jugs, flat top pistons and SE255 cams. Stock heads. standard push rods. Only need adjustable ones if you just change cams and don't remove the heads. Since you are replacing the jugs, the heads must be removed.

Figure on compression releases with the 255 cams, will run you probably another $300 for the manual versions installed since the heads are already off the bike or maybe $400 for the ACR (automatic compression releases). If you don't go with the compression releases, you will need to go with the SE compensator on the fly wheel.

If you don't do one of the above, you will have to do it sooner or later, then it will be more expensive. Do it while the bike is down.

Other folks offer other kits, 105 107 110 113, the list is endless. Anything you do, you will still need a Power Commander, Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner (SERT) or somebodys brand of instrument to change the settings on the computer. You will need more open pipes. You will need a more open breather. These cost are not figured into the cost of an engine upgrade by anyone. Plan on it or you have wasted your money on the upgrade.

So anyone who give you a price, add the extra for the above mentioned articles so you get the biggest bang for the buck. That's about all I can say on the subject.

Lee, I'm looking into the power duals and want to know how you like them over stock headpipes. I already have the monster ovals on.

If you have the time and money you can see what I did to mine below. The only thing that I am going to do is add the tuner I understand it will help a lot. I don't need the power for speed but just need the torque, and I got that. The 255 cam's are the same as the ones they put in the 103 kit so if you don't like it then you could just add the piston and jugs later, granted it will cost a bit more or you could save some money. Depends on how you want to look at it.

There are alot of options. After market stuff is great. And contrary to popular beliefs... not all SE builds are Beagles (with 3 legs).

Read all the posts, decide if your going to do it or pay someone, shovel through all the info and pick what works for you. You may only need an evo 30 tooth sprocket, cams, pipe and a tuner to get what you need.

Good luck

I really like the 103 SEII kit from a bike performance standpoint. Better seat of the pants kick, much better accelleration especially from a stop, and better fuel economy.
I have, though, been dealing with starter kick-back and starter drive problems ever since. Ended up pulling the heads and drilling out for comp releases. That helped a bunch. But the starter developed drive problems and just recently I replaced it with the 1.4 amp heavy duty starter. So we will see if that cures the problems.

Your cost to do a turn key SE II with cams, pipes, intake, gaskets, SERT, 3 hr dyno tune will be around $3500. The costs of the comp releases is around $60 ea. and labor to drill the heads while they are already off for the 103 jugs will be maybe $130 ea. The starter change out will run you maybe $550 parts and labor. So, for around $4400 you should be close to done with it for a turn key job, unless you go ahead and change out the compensator. I didn't do that yet, so can't give you a cost on that item. Anyway, when done, I will guarantee you will make a new bike out of that slug 96 motor and there will be nothing but grins..

I would contact headquarters and get their 103 Touring kit:

http://www.head-quarters.com/html/hq-tc-103-t.html

This will smoke the screamin' eagle stuff and you will be much happier...

If you wanna go on your own and put a kit together get a set of harley 103" 10:1 cast pistons, have your jugs bored to match, use a Woods TW-6, have big boyz do the heads up, replace the lifters, pushrods, etc. etc. and you will be good to go. This option would be cheaper and better than the screamin' eagle option.

Thanks everyone. I talked to an Indy that I know today and he suggested I do a set of cams and a tune on the pc 5 that I already have to see if that will get what I am looking for. Then if it doesn't this winter he will install the 103 kit and have the heads ported by big boyz. He is gonna do this for me in the next week or so and we'll see what the results are and go from there.

Someone on here asked what I thought of the power duals and I think they are fine but I'm not 100% in love with them. I'm actually in the process of changing out my monster ovals to a set of standard rinehart slip ons. The constant drone going down the highway bothered me quite a bit on the way to sturgis(I typically wear a ff helmet and ear plugs). It's hard to describe but for me the MO aren't what I ultimately wanted. I'm going to keep the power duals but ebay the monster ovals in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks again for the info everyone!!!!
