Peak HP and TQ figures tell only part of the story. If you spend most of your time between 2000-4000rpm, for example, and the TQ peak on your new cams is 10 higher at 4200 but lower where you ride most, you may find the upgrade to be counterproductive.
If you value peak HP most and like being up near the redline, get a more aggressive cam set. If you want to pass a truck and want the power now without downshifting, you want a cam set that produces the most TQ in the low-end and midrange. The problem is that all other factors being equal you can't have both and will sacrifice one for the other. If you start injecting other upgrades into the picture, like increased compression (CR), you can make up for some of the low-end loss from installing aggressive cams.
The SE255's are great for heavy touring bikes with tall gearing, as with their early intake close and high lift they will increase the low-end and midrange. Although the HP peak will be improved, it won't be as much as a cam designed for that purpose and will peak at about 5000rpm.
I have a few bikes now and for touring I like the SE 255 cams. Good mpg, Good tq. and power right off throttle and good sound.
I also have a bike with 110 ci with 121 hp with 117 tq. Although this bike is awesome in power and tq. form the gitgo to way past what I care for to ride in power and speed I prefer riding my ultra. Main reason I do not get in so much trouble. I ride it on my IBA rides. It will change your mind about high speed traveling.
There is a limit for each of us. The problem is we do not find it until we have it and that could be a bad thing for some of us.
