Metzler has the following sizes to fit 09 with 17 front 16 rear

130/80 R17 is stock size

130/70 R17
140/80 R17
You could also ventrue into the 120mm wide range but that would look a little too small in my opinion.

They also have
180/60 R16
180/70 R16
either of which would fit the rear tire as well. The rear stock size is 180/65 R16 as well.

I have an '05 RG and have always used the OEM Dunlop Tires. However, I would like to go to the multi-compound tires with the harder middle and the softer sides. Any recommendations for a tire like that to fit the older models?

I am looking for a replacement front tire as well, but the metzler seems to be around $150 plus shipping and I can get a HD 408F Dunlop for $133 plus shipping from Zanotti's.

I thought maybe the non Harley brand would be cheaper. What kind of mileage will the metzler provide?

I believe the Dunlop Elite 3's are multi compound tire. I know a lot of people like them and they are made in stock size for your year bike.

Stock tire is cheaper, but after market tires are generally a lot better. There usually is a trade off on softer better handling tire that doesn't last as long. With that being said, I got about 12K out of the rear Metzler on my Fatboy, and had about 24K out of the front. But your millage will vary depending on your riding style.

You're going to find that the rear tire isn't very easy to replace with anything other than the OEM tire as well. If you are wanting to have more options available, it may be necessary to, as you said, 'go to pimp town with an 18/21 setup'

Good luck.
So, does this mean the 17" setup performs better? Is the 16" setup less desirable?
Inquiring minds have to know.....

Okay Howard, I do like these new 09 OEM tires much better than the 07 OEM tires, could be the frame doing that also (except the cupping issue on the 407). I have come to trust your input and advice over the years here on the forum, some people get a little standoffish with your direct approch, I like it. Since you really are a suspension expert what set of tires would you recommend for a stock rims on a 09 UC. Getting ready for a rear in a couple thousand more miles.

M.B., Go on over to Competition as they have a terrific stock. Out your door hit 75 north to 595 than 95 S. to to old Griffin. I have spent many hours over the years researching first than putting my hands on em'. Talk to the new part owner as Steve has retired. Bring a note book with your questions and laundry list of subjects and products to investigate. He will give you the books and phone numbers of whom to call to ask those questions that are hard to find the answers to. He use to work for Custom Chrome until he decided to settle down. He has got 20 + years in the business of aftermarket parts. The best part is you can touch and lift the stuff. Lets you understand how it works. When you are finished, you than can make an intelligent purchasing choice. The good part is after a few years of study, the tire manufactures only come out with a limited amount of new products the next "model" year. When going to motorcycle gatherings you can talk to the manufacturers with questions other than "That is a nice black part". It gets easy after a while as you can draw on past knowledge to grasp the new technology. This is what method I use when I want to "be knowing things". Of course the more complex the question the more sources you should consult.

The bike and wheel looks great. I've never altered a bike like that. I see a lot of the fat tires and the one's like yours that have the big front wheel with the smaller rear wheel. But, I don't want to sacrifice ride quality and handling. How does it handle, not just in a straight line but in the curves?
