As much as I liked the Hogtunes, I was still getting the radio problem when the weather was hot.
When I got the bike, the speakers in it were 4 ohm aftermarket.
The Hogtunes are not 8 ohm also even though most people have good luck with them.
Picked up the HD High Performance speakers (#77181-01) and installed them this morning.
They are 8 ohm, 50 watt.
Weather was hot today so I went for a good long ride with the tape deck cranked with AC/DC.
Problem is gone.
The radio performed great, did not overheat and start cutting out.
Sound coming from these speakers is very, very good.
I will update again if these start to be a problem but I was on the bike for 4 hours today and it worked perfect.
There is a ground on the frame back bone on the throttle side of the bike--in front of tank. You will see a wire harness"strap" with a 5/16" head screw which will also accept a flat head screw driver. Behind the strap is 2 wires, each with a ring terminal. Theses need to be cleaned and retightened. This is the main ground inside the RG fairing. I have a customer who recently cleaned and retightened these grounds and all problems were solved.
i have a question maybe you can answer i have a 8 ohm system if you have 8 ohm speakers it should ohm out at 7.25 anything less they are no good. i have hog tune speakers model 914.2 they are sutiable for 4-8 ohms nominal at 5.75 they ohm out at 5.6 how can they work for a 8 ohm system when they ohm out at 5.6 and any thing i read says if its lower that 7.2 you need new speakers
Not sure about the 2001 radios, but the one in my 1998 has a set of internal diagnostics that you can run. The radio manual that comes with the bike has it in there.
I just put the biketronics system in my bike, wow what a difference, so much better then the old HD system, plus I got the stereo that you can put a ipod or mp3 player inside the stereo behind the face of the stereo, no cd's to carry and can play hundreds of songs, can still use the controls on the handle bars and switch between radio and mp3 player and never have to touch the stereo, sounds so much better to, best mod I have done so far to my 99 EG
