For the fifth time now, while on a vacation trip to boot, my 08 Ultra started the fast idle routine up to 2,000 RPM. I reset using the on-off four times but it happened again. They've reflashed this thing three different times. I've never had a bike with this weird problem in 30 years of riding. Can't they fix this once and for all!
Are you making sure you are not touching the throttle when you shut if off? Mine will do that if I do not take my hand off the throttle and let it return to normal idle before I shut it off. It will mess with the throttle position sensor if you dont.
Are you letting it warm up long enough? I have to let mine run for around 3 to 4 minutes(in the summer) at least or it will rev, but it eventually will settle down soon there after.
Alot of people when moving their bike have their hands on the throttle and without realizing it move it.This will end up setting the idle high.done it myself.Have to be cognicant of this.

Are you saying when the bikes turned off?? If so, I don't believe that would affect the idle..If it's done while the engine is running, yes it would affect the idle at the next start up.
through the years i've seen so many people drive up to a store or wherever they're gonna be parked, and rev the motor in their, for example, 64 chevy truck right before they shut it off. why? because they don't know any better is why. the fresh shot of gas washes the oils from the cylinder walls. i've also seen bike riders do the same thing. it's a bad habit to get into. every time when you shut off your motor, if you take a second and allow it to come to idle, not touching the throttle, you should not have the problem with hi idle. hope you get it figured out.
When you go to shut off the bike. Use the ignition switch on the fairing.
First let it idle for a few seconds. With you hand OFF the throttle.
Then use the switch.
Never had a problem with mine.
Do this, or deal with the issues.
And dont tell me other year bikes didnt have an issue. I have links saved for people who say that.
Another work-around is to use the ignition switch to shut it off instead of the run switch. If you use the run switch on the '08's and do not let the idle drop down it will reset the idle to the rpm level it is at when you hit the run/off switch.
