How can that spring break ? the number of coils for the total length of linear movement of the ends radius is less than 1/2 of the total expansion ! Geeeeeze......maybe it's the Jap steel ?
I just did mine last night. Took about a half hour. I did draw some blood though!
I think the post about the gun oil is a good one. My spring was rusted pretty badly. A libral dose of gun oil once every couple of months would probably make these springs last a lot longer.
They break because they rust and it weakens the metal. the new springs installed n mine look like stainless steel and I gave mine a good coat of WD40 now to keep it from happening again.
I just finished replacing the spring on my saddlebag latch. What a pain!!!! I thought that it would be a quick fix... pop out the broken spring & pop in a new one. Not even close. It took 4 hours of trying to get the spring spread & aligned while sliding the rod back through it. After 4 hours I had to call someone for an extra set of hands to help. 2 sets of vice-girps, 1 c-clamp and a chisel (don't ask) finally got it done.
I consider myself fairly mechanically inclined, but that was crazy!!
