Default Maintenance question, high idle speed.

Any ideas why my '08 RG would sometimes idle at 2000rpm? I almost think it happens after I've been on a high speed run on the highway. I was thinking the computer has to readjust it's mixture for lower running. But comparing to my buddies street glide, his always idles at 1000. It's not consistant either, sometimes it idles at 1200 or other times at any speed between 1200 and 2000. Never lower than 1200. Probably have to take it in huh?

Also, any thoughts on a shop manual. Can you recommend an alternate to the hundred buck HD manual? pros/cons?

The idle is a shop adjustment but I don't think that's the problem (adjustment). Sounds to me like it could be one of the sensors. The ECM directs fast idle on cold start - maybe your engine temp sensor(s) are going south.

You need to reset the TBW throttle. You probably hand your hand on the grip when you shut it off. It happens on the '08s.

"Turn your switch on and off slowly, four time in a row."

The computer remembers your last three idle speeds, or so they say. Trust me it works.

Had the same problem on 97 Ultra--Turned out to be an intake gasket was leaking.

Typically this is caused because the throttle gets twisted when you stretch your thumb to use the kill switch next to the throttle.

Tx Fat Boy has the reset procedure correct. Leave it in each position for a few seconds.

Excellent. This forum is great. Ok, this is my routine... I always come gliding in to a rolling stop with the engine killed. So when ever I shut it down I am always moving, I use my thumb and simutanously hit the kill switch and pull in the clutch, then glide to a stop making a one point landing. So yeah, definately the engine is always running over idle speed when I kill it.

haha... so simple.

Thanks a million folks. Now I have my answer. I was so worried..

"Slow" means - Wait for the radio to come on (5-8 seconds for "ON") and wait for the "security" flash (another 5-8 seconds for "OFF").

Without actually starting the bike, if that wasn't clear.

Default Hi Idle Problem

Had same problem with my 08 Ultra. Took it back to dealer. There is a new download that has to be done that will completley cure this problem. Took them 1/2 HOUR & I haven't had a problem in a year.

I was told (by the dealer) to avoid the download if possible because of potential "funky throttle response" as they called it -

That said, they very well could have modified that update (been over a year now)...
