not that simple--- he is 6 hours away--- have to take a bank check with me---which has to be processed by my credit union a couple of days ahead of time - I don't mind paying a reasonable price for the right bike--- not lookin to get a steal (not that I'd mind one)--- just a decent deal on a great bike--- thanks tho!

I feel for you Papa...
If I had any choice, I would never choose to live in California with all the draconian gun laws, emissions standards, the (lack of) budget and taxes, and other encroachments on how people live their lives. What a friggin' nightmare of a state government.
You'll find what you're looking for eventually. Hope its sooner rather than later.
And if you need to be carrying around pre-endorsed bank checks, best to either do the wheeling and dealing over the phone, or else plan to make two trips - neither of which is optimal.
Any bike shows coming up that you could attend to see whats for sale?
It looks like a great bike. Sounds like it stirred your soul so just get it. Like you said, you're missing out on some great riding time. Snooze you lose. You're gonna kick yourself for missing this.

I did not read every post..sorry if this has been said, BUT:
You can register an out of state bike in CA after it has 7500 miles on it. It is on the DMV web site.
Also, $18,500 plus tax and lic is well over $20k. You will still have to pay tax and lic on that used one... Yes, you can fib a little, but don't kid yourself. Make sure you compare actual costs...
My local dealer had a new 09, flat black standard, with led lights, and I know you could get it for 20k OTD.
I think you are paying basically the same price for a new stock bike. So the question is: Are the add-ons worth the risk?... and warranty duration.
Tax and lic, plus full warranty time, are always the great equalizer on nice, used, bikes. It's a tuff call.
