Default HOT TOPIC!

OK, here's the deal. I want to know from those that have removed the lower fairings from their Ultra's, etc., just how much more air flow do you get. The temps around here are in the upper 70's and low 80's right now and I'm getting a lot of heat from the motor sitting behind that lower fairing. I want to know if it's worth it to remove it during the summer, OR, does the shape/angle of the fairing actually help keep the motor cooler by deflecting air onto the engine? If it does help keep the engine cooler, I can take the heat. If it don't make no kinda difference, then off it comes!

Took mine off the first summer, didnt really notice alot of difference. Put em back on and left em on for 3 years with as many x-cntrty trips thru the desert etc. On my new one I dont plant on removing them at all.

I dont know of the specifics but it should cause your bike to run cooler with the forced air flow. Long trips without them can get tiring on your legs, with the pant legs wavin in the wind. Thats one of the reasons I added a set to my RK, that and its so much better with cold weather/rain.

You get a ton more airflow without them which means your legs get the brunt of the wind. Another thing you can do to get more air to your engine (according to my dealer who runs a big inch stroked roadglide) is to put a fat boy front fender on your dresser. The big FLH fender deflects lots of air off your engine. I put one on mine and it looks great (see post in general chat-New pictures of my bike).

Most dealers will tell you to take off your lowers but I like them on (even though they are off right now). When I lowered my front end 1 1/4 inch and put the fat boy fender on I had a clearance problem with the fender tip and front of lowers (oops).

Nice look! I've been toying with the idea of putting FatBoy rims on my Ultra. I like the solid wheel look myself.[8D]

The 05s are vented and I removed mine and saw no improvement in oil temp...and they sure do take the wind off the legs, so on they stay!

I've had two Ultras, a '95 Evo and a '01 TC95. My experience is that the lowers keep the engine cooler when moving. The design of the lowers is to direct the air over the engine pushing the hot air away. If you can feel the heat on your legs, it's because it is being moved off the engine. However, when sitting still, or inching along in traffic, the lowers "trap" the hot air around you, since it is not being pushed away.

I ride with mine on year round. I keep them on even in the summer, because I believe that is when it is needed the most to push the hot air away from the engine so it can run cooler. To help keep myself cool, I added some vents into the lowers, something that was new for '05, I installed an oil cooler, added true duals to get rid of the cross over under the right leg, and I run Syn3 (always a debateable issue).

I find the lowers also protects my legs and keeps them from taking a beating from the wind.
