Default Road Glide Nacille Removal

So I will need to remove the gauge pod, and nacille to get to the forks to change the oil. I take the switch off super easy. Now after I remove the speedo and tach and remove the bolts that hold the nacille down the forks how do I remove the part that is directly under the switch? The plastic piece that says... Off, Lock, Acc etc... Everything else seems simple enough except I can't find in the book how to remove this part?

I was looking at that setup the other day. I am wondering if you even need to mess with switch. It looks like the parts that sit over the forks split in the center. I may be wrong, but I am hoping when I get around to it, perhaps at the end of the season, I can get access to the to by just removing those or perhaps just loosening them enough to swing out of the way. What bothers me is that the service manual indicates that you are to remove the forks and pour out the oil. That seems kinda kooky to me. But I am not an expert motorcycle mechanic, so there may be some reason why HD would write that in the manual.

If you have the switch out then there is a nut that unscrews and 1 or 2 pieces under it. Make sure you take note of how the pieces are assembled, if you put it back together wrong it won't work.

as stated,,,, Yes, the switch needs to be remove - then the nut below and spacer, then the plate that says off,on, acces..

I strongly suggest you break out the old master card and buy a service manual... It will pay for its self over time... I also got a parts book at the same time.. Boy do I use that book - it has blow up pics for all areas and is great for understanding what goes where and if you need a part - well, there is the part number...

enjoy...

depending on what year bike you have,, good luck with the oil change.. I have an 04 and its NOT possible for a garage mech like me to do this job....

I can take the forks off and take to the dealer but that is as far as I dare go.. later years I 'think' are easier ???

If that plastic piece is like that on a road king it is just pressure fit. SO grab it and pull straight up.

When you're getting everything buttoned back up, you may have a problem getting the ignition switch shaft back in correctly. The service manual tells you that you need a special HD "alignment tool" but a medium length flat blade screwdriver works just as well.

The switch is a piece of cake, I can use my finger to get it off. I was wondering about the cover that says on/off/acc. I saw the nut but I wasn't sure if that was it or not and I can't find it in the manual for that procedure. If you remove that nut to get the plate off is that where you need the tool? I thought the tool was just a way to turn the bike on/off/acc when the switch is off and also to prevent the fork lock from engaging. I could be wrong on that but that was my understanding. The more I look at it I think it is probably easier than I am making it.

you will find it in the service manual NOT the owners manual..

Now not sure what you want removed... here is how to remove the ing ****..

A. Insert the key and turn to Unlock position. Leave the key installed in the ****

B. turn forks to the left stop and rotate the knot to fork lock

C. Depressing the release button at the bottom left side (underneath) with a small screwdriver, pushs key down and turn 60 degrees in a counter-clockswise direction

D. lift and remove ****.

This all is on page 8-51 of my 2004 service manual.

its not that hard - sounds harder than it is...

Was this your question or am I WAY off base here??

Thanks for the anwser. I am using a service manual, I can get the switch off no problem. My question is the plastic piece direclty under the switch that indicates what position the switch is in. It is the piece that has the writing on it for lock/off/on/acc. Once that is off the rest of the nacille is 2 piece and only 3 bolts easy to get off, just not sure about the thin plastic peice off without damaging it.

The plastic piece will pop out once you have the Ign switch, nut and plastic spacer off. The tool is only to move the parts inside the Ign housing to unlock the forks and then to line everything up to get it back together. If you have a medium/big flat srewdriver it will do the samething.
