Just got home from a 2500 mile ride. Last Saturday the check engine light came on when riding over 75mph and would go off when I slowed down to about 72-73mph. On Sunday morning about ten minutes into the ride the light came on again for about five minutes and then went off and never came back on for the rest of the trip regardless of speed. Saturday evening at the motel, the oil checked out, as well as the plugs and AC. The bike was, and still is, dirty but I didn't think it would be that sensitive to it's appearance.
The bike ran well the whole time and I would like to avoid taking it to a dealer if I can figure this out myself with a little help from forum members here. If this had happened on a weekday and I had been close to a dealer. I would have asked them to check it out but as it turned out it made it about another 800 miles home with no apparent damage. Thanks.
When you start her up does the check engine light come on for about 4 seconds then go out? If so, then there was an "event" and a "DTC code" is stored in memory. If the check engine light stays on, there is an active problem.
1. Turn ignition switch to "OFF" and Run/Stop switch to "RUN"
2. Push in Odometer reset button and hold
3. Turn Ignition switch to "IGNITION" and release Odometer reset button. Back ground should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps should illuminate. the word "DIAG" should appear.
4. Push the Odometer reset button once and the letters "PSSPt" should appear. with the first letter "P" flashing.
5. To get the DTC push in the odometer reset button and hold for 5 seconds. Release.
6. If there are any codes they will be displayed. If there are no codes the word "NONE" will appear.
7. Write down the codes and I will check my list to see what they refer to.
I did this out of curiousity, after it said none, I hit the odometer button again, it had a scrolling message that said PN 32933-09 I ran it as a part number, but I couldn't get a hit. Anyone know what it is. Also, I just turned the ignition switch off. I went to crank it after that and I never heard the fuel pump kick on and it seemed like I got a little starter kickback......
Thanks everybody. I will get on this tomorrow. Yes, the check engine light comes on when I turn the ignition and run switches on and it stays on for about four seconds. I normally wait for it to go off before starting. I may have started it up before the light went out while on this trip as I was tired and not thinking about the things I do out of habit. I'll post what I find out.
