Broke down the other day in 4th gears. The dog ear on the top of the transmission (06 RG) was flapping in the breeze. I was able to get going again by getting a turn or so on the 1/4" allen head bolt. I was able to at least shift through the gears. I shifted VERY easily cause there's a bit of play even with that tight..so I'm looking at 4-5 hours of R&R plus parts. I'm pretty mechanical but never pulled a tranny before.
So, I was thinking..will an 07+ tranny fit in an 06? If so, what else will need to be changed over, clutch cable, primary cover etc?
How hard and what's involved in changing just my stripped linkage and possibly the shaft it attaches to?
HD 07 factory trans won't fit an 06 trans case.
The fix is not hard, just time consuming. Odds are the lever is stripped and transmission linkage is ok. But you won't know until you get it apart to inspect. You'll need to pull the inner primary to get access to remove the lingage from the side of the transmission. Remove the lever and determine is the linkage is stripped. If so, remove the top trans cover, linkage is easy to remove/replace. When you install shift lever on new linkage be sure it has no play before you tighten the holding bolt. You should have to lightly tap the new shift lever on. I have placed the lever in a vice to close it up a little to make sure there is no play to start with.
Yes, all of this repair can be done with removal of inner primary and trans top cover. I'd give GMR's comments a try. I had this happen to me about two years ago on a road trip. It was the lever that was stripped and the lingage was fine.
