Default Accessory Plug Voltage

I decided to check my voltage out of the accessory plug today. It read 14.25 volts idling. I thought that seemed a bit high. Shut it off, restarted 1/2 hour later and rechecked. Still 14.25 volts. Went for a ride, then came back and checked, still 14.25 volts. Then I grabbed another meter and rechecked yet again. Still 14.25 volts. This seems a bit high to me, is this normal for everyone? I was expecting something in the mid 13 range. Bike is 2009 Ultra.

check the battery voltage with the engine off, probably around 13.2 (2.2 volts per cell), not unusual at all to have the alternator run voltage that high to provide a good charge to the battery. we have constant float chargers on our 2600 horsepower CAT emergency gens at work, on that 24 volt system (12v's in series) they usually run 28-29 volts, about the same as your getting. perfectly normal in my experience

Actually electronic voltage regulators are designed to put out 14.2 volts. Any more and it
would boil the water out, any less and your battery wouldn't charge with the lights and stereo and all the accessories you use when you ride.

Congrats! Bike is working good. Just curious, but what possessed you to check the voltage?

Thanks bmaier, and my1sthog for the verifications. The battery voltage, ignition off, is exactly what you posted as well. I am building a toy to run on the bike and needed to design my curcuit so I didn't run too much current. Also interesting to note that accessory plug is live all the time, regardless of ignition position. Glad I checked. Thanks again.

Interesting comment about the state of your accessory connection, you say you are designing some kit so clearly you are proficient with reading the electircal cct diagram for your bike.

On the 08 Ultra there are 2 options when you connect to the accessory plug, namely:

Ignition Switch Live
Ignition Switch Live AND Accessory rocker switch high.

I am 150% sure this is correct on my bike as I have used this plug functionality.

It sounds to me like you could have the wrong plug! There are literally hundreds of posts in this forum, and indeed one of them was from me when I first started out - on the 08 user manual it shows the wrong plug

I was referring to the SAE plug located just above the oil cap. It occured to me that this is probably meant to be a tethering plug for the battery to be charged and that is why it is not switched. I misspoke when referring to it as the accessory plug. It was just a convenient spot for me to check voltage. Thanks for the clarification for futures searchers.
